    2025

    October 2025

Year 6 have had a rich and engaging term full of exploration, creativity, and discovery across a wide range of subjects.

    History

We continued our deep dive into the Tudor period, focusing on key figures and events. Pupils explored whether Mary I deserved the title "Bloody Mary" or if she was misunderstood, and examined the challenges faced by Elizabeth I during her reign. A highlight was our trip to Hever Castle, where we took part in a workshop, explored the historic home of Anne Boleyn, and enjoyed the beautiful gardens.

    Science

In Science, we investigated the human heart and how activity affects heart rate. Pupils conducted an experiment measuring different heart rates and plotted their results on graph paper, learning how to interpret and present data effectively.

    English

Our English work included writing a biography of Anne Frank, helping pupils understand her life and legacy. We also created non-chronological reports about the human eye, combining research skills with clear and informative writing.

    Religious Education:

We explored the similarities and differences between religion and Humanism, encouraging thoughtful discussion and reflection. Pupils wrote poems about peace, expressing what peace means to them and considering why achieving peace can be challenging for everyone.

    Maths:

In maths, we continued developing our understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages, and worked on statistics, learning to interpret data and use it in real-world contexts.

    Well-being:

We celebrated Hello Yellow Day, where children dressed in yellow and took part in activities focused on mental health awareness. Pupils shared ideas on how to support their own wellbeing and the importance of looking after our mental health.

We can’t wait to see how Year 6 impress us again after half term!

Year 6 – A Fantastic Start to the Year!

Year 6 have settled in brilliantly and have already impressed us with their outstanding learning behaviours. We’re so excited to see what they’ll achieve this year!

In English, we’ve been writing powerful narratives inspired by Mourning Dove. The children’s writing has been so moving, it brought tears to our eyes — tissues were definitely needed! Take a look at some of their incredible work below.

In Maths, we’ve tackled key concepts including multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, and fractions, decimals and percentages (FDP). The children have shown great resilience and enthusiasm in their learning.

Our Science lessons have focused on the heart and the circulatory system, with pupils gaining a strong understanding of how our bodies work.

In Topic, we’ve been exploring Tudor history, asking the big question: Which of Henry VIII’s wives had the greatest impact on his reign? The children have produced some impressive and thoughtful writing — scroll down to see for yourself!

We also welcomed Essex Police for an important session on online safety. Pupils discussed age restrictions, how to stay safe on social media, and what to do if they ever feel worried online.

We can’t wait to see how Year 6 will impress us next!

    2024-2045

Year 6 have had an exciting term filled with reading, writing, and hands-on science experiments!

In English, we have been reading Wonder, a novel that has sparked thoughtful discussions about empathy and kindness. Inspired by Replay, the children have been crafting diary entries, stepping into the shoes of different characters. We've also explored the world of spooky storytelling by putting a chilling twist on Hansel and Gretel, creating our own eerie versions of the classic tale.

Science has been full of discoveries as we investigated variation and inheritance. One of our favorite experiments involved using different tools, like syringes and chopsticks, to simulate different bird beaks. This hands-on activity helped us understand which beak shapes are best suited for survival in different environments.

A highlight of the term was World Book Day! The children not only dressed up in fantastic homemade costumes, but they also designed them to match characters from books they had written themselves—bringing their own stories to life in a truly creative way.

We’re looking forward to more exciting learning next term!

After returning from our winter break, Y6 have been extremely busy with our learning. In English, we have been looking at various topics and genres of writing, in particular we have looked at report writing as we learned all about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii. It is interesting to learn that artefacts are still being discovered today, even though this tragic event took place in 79AD. We have also been writing a narrative based on a video: Roads End. You never know what is awaiting you around the next bend in the road...

In maths, we have reviewed our prior learning but have focused on the 4 calculations, measurement and converting units as well as area, perimeter and volume. Not to mention tons of arithmetic and reasoning questions to prepare us for our upcoming SATs. We are currently reading a text called: Pig Heart Boy and as you can imagine, it is about a young boy, who unfortunately had to have a heart transplant and was given a pig heart. Some people were intrigued by this, while others were aggressively angry about it as they considered it cruelty towards animals. What are your thoughts?

We had a very interesting debate about sin and forgiveness within our RE lesson: Should you be forgiven if you sin and repent? We also included different religious views that we have already learned about such as reincarnation. Some people believe that rebirth and reincarnation is similar to forgiveness - a second chance.

It has been a very busy yet exciting ½ term as we continue to learn and develop at Aveley Primary School.

    From your head boy,

    Noah

    December 2024

There are many achievements and highlights within the autumn term that I am very proud to share and discuss. A big part of our focus has been getting ready for the SATs, where students have been working hard on practice assessments. These exercises have helped us pinpoint areas where additional support is needed.

For Geography, the class dove into an exciting unit on Mexico. One of the best parts was making traditional Piñatas, which turned out to be a fantastic way to spark creativity and teamwork among the students while learning about Mexican culture.

We also had a visit from folks at Ford, who discussed electric vehicles. Their presentation was super interesting and got everyone chatting about sustainability and why eco-friendly options matter. This experience really helped us broaden our understanding of our Electricity unit and made us think about the effectiveness of electric vehicles.

Excitingly, the students took part in a lively debate on whether kids should be banned from buying junk food. This really helped them to sharpen their critical thinking and craft balanced arguments, considering both health issues and personal choice.

Winding down to the winter holidays, has been quite busy but enjoyable. Singing Christmas carols for our patio performance, making Christingles and singing at the church.

Overall, the Autumn term has been a fantastic mix of fun and learning, setting a solid groundwork for what’s to come!

    November 2024

Wow Year 6 are doing lots of fantastic learning!

In English, we did a fact file about the how and how important it is to keep our eyes safe. We also wrote a suspense narrative set in abandoned schools, hotels and train stations. We have learnt about time, angles and how to calculate area, perimeter and volume within our Maths lessons. In Geography, we are learning about Mexico; its rainfall and climate as well as other features of Mexico. The DT lessons are also linked to Mexico as we will be making Pinatas. Within our science lessons, it has been electrifying as we learn all about electricity while we make parallel and series circuits. Our class text for this term is Street Child where a boy ends up in a Victorian Workhouse, manages to escape and the adventures he faces.

Keep watching this space to find out more!

In the first few weeks of this school year, we have been learning a lot! In English, we have been writing a biography about Anne Frank, writing emotive letters, character descriptions and flashback narratives. In maths, we have been recapping long division as well as interpreting different types of graphs; line and pie charts. Our class text is Private Peaceful by Michael Murpurgo; it is set in WWI and is about two brothers going to fight in the war, even though one is underage. In Science, we have been learning all about the circulatory system and the heart including the functions, all about blood and how to keep healthy. Within our history topic; The Tudors, as part of our learning we visited Hever Castle, discussed if Mary was truly ‘Bloody’ or just simply misunderstood and looked at the troubles Elizabeth I endured as a Monarch. Check back on our page to see more of our fantastic learning!

    2023-2024

In science we have started a new topic on animal classification, studying Carl Linnaeus and creating classification keys which has built on our prior knowledge from lower key stage 2.

In Year 6 this week, we have been writing a suspense narrative based on a visual text – a short video called Road’s End. We tried to include all skills Year 6 pupils are expected to be able to use: varied sentence openers (past and present participle phrases, simile openers, subordinate conjunction clauses); advanced punctuation (dashes, apostrophes, semi-colons, colons, ellipses); metaphorical language and any other devices to create suspense.Have a look at some of our lovely examples below.

    Road's End Examples

Children in Year 6 have been working incredibly hard this term. They have thoroughly enjoyed exploring our Mexico topic and have learned a great deal about climate, locality, and the deserts of the world. It was particularly surprising for the children to discover that deserts can actually be cold!

One aspect that has stood out this term is the quality of the writing produced by the children. Their creativity and imagination have truly shone through, especially in the poems they have created. To inspire their writing, we used the wonderful book, 'The Day the Crayons Quit,' which sparked some innovative ideas using personification.

First and foremost, we would like to thank you for supporting this event by dressing your children in Tudor costumes. The effort put into their attire was remarkable, and it truly added to the authentic atmosphere of the day. The enthusiasm and creativity shown by both the children and their parents were commendable.

Throughout the day, the children engaged in various activities that helped them immerse themselves in the world of the Tudors. They had the opportunity to participate in art workshops, where they learned about Tudor art techniques and created their own Tudor-inspired masterpieces. The level of creativity and attention to detail demonstrated by the children was truly exceptional. We also had a special workshop on Tudor calligraphy. The children learned about the importance of handwriting during the Tudor era. One of the highlights of the day was the re-enactment of the Battle of Bosworth. The children were divided into two teams and took on the roles of soldiers and key historical figures from this significant battle. They demonstrated great teamwork, strategy, and leadership throughout the re-enactment, and it was fascinating to see history come to life in such an engaging manner.

As teachers, we are incredibly proud of the children's enthusiasm and engagement during Tudor Day. The event provided a unique opportunity for them to step back in time and gain a deeper understanding of this important period in history.

In Science, we have been learning about the Circulatory System. This week we specifically focused on the components of the blood. Children watched videos explaining the roles of each of the components and explained them in their books, using scientific terminology.
