British Values

                                                  Aveley Primary British Values Statement

At Aveley Primary we are fortunate that our pupils, their families, our staff and other partners represent a diverse range of home backgrounds. We teach a themed curriculum which links with the national curriculum. It also incorporates the interests of pupils and supports them in becoming good local, national and global citizens of the future.

The Department for Education states that there is a need:

“To create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs”.

Our school reflects British values in all that we do. We nurture our pupils on their journey through life so they grow in to caring, responsible and tolerant adults who make a positive difference to British society and to the wider world. We encourage them to be creative, unique, open-minded and independent individuals, respectful of themselves and others in our school, our local community and beyond.

At Aveley Primary we actively promote British values in the following ways:

Democracy

We work towards all pupils having a good understanding and appreciation for democracy in Britain. The school council is elected democratically and sits once per week and discusses a range of topics that directly impact the school. In class, we regularly hold debates and discussion on a range of topics. To support our pupils’ appreciation of democracy we also learn about topics such as apartheid.

Rule of Law

Rules are an integral part of society in Britain today, we make sure that our children understand why the rule of law is important and why it should be adhered to. At Aveley Primary School, we reinforce high expectations of our pupils and make sure that our pupils understand the reasoning behind the rules that we have. Every class writes their own class rules at the beginning of the year, with a central focus around pupil involvement and understanding. Pupils also learn about topics such as E Safety, road safety and explore the roles of people who can help us.

Individual Liberty

Pupils at Aveley Primary are encouraged and supported to make a range of different choices, understanding that they are in an environment that allows them to do so. Beginning in Reception, we provide our pupils opportunities for child led learning including through homework projects and child-initiated learning. We provide children with the opportunity to make choices daily such as lunch menu choices, reading book choices and after school club choices. Our key aim is to support our pupils so that they can make well informed choices without any fear or anxiety.

Mutual Respect

Respect is one of the school's central core values and underpins all the work that we undertake at Aveley Primary School. Our staff have high positive regard for all pupils, parents, carers and other adults that they encounter. We believe that these relationships are pivotal in supporting our pupils to fulfil their full potential. Within class, our pupils are given many opportunities to work with different people in different scenarios and settings.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Our pupils are given a range of opportunities to understand other faiths and cultures. Our R.E. and P.S.H.E.E provide these opportunities for our pupils to develop tolerance, empathy and understanding towards those from different faiths and beliefs. We often have assemblies that focus around different faiths and beliefs and celebrate different festivals throughout the year. To support this, we often share stories with our pupils' exploring morals, cultures and beliefs.

                                                                       Our Core Values

We celebrate and promote the British Values in conjunction with our own school core values.

                                                   RESPECT, POSITIVITY, RESPONSIBILITY
